Slaughter Time!

I'm about to go up to the reindeer slaughterhouse to try and pick through carcasses for good anatomy/physiology specimens for dissection. They hearded about 600 in this year and I'm going to pick through them all if I have to. The things we do for our kids. I guess I'm going to get pretty bloody so I'll make sure to take lots of pictures. Formally, this is what I'm looking for:

10 brains (in tact hopefully)
1 heart (hard to get)
An in tact respiratory tract (trachea, lungs and diaphragm)
As many eyeballs as possible
Stomach/intestines (connected if possible)
Possibly genitals...oh my god.
Blood Vessels and Veins
Skin sections


Depending on how many are available I might have enough for a class set, I'm hoping I don't throw up in the process. Wish me luck.

Holy toledo!! That sounds incredible. I've always been a fan of body parts. They are so interesting! I had a cow eye a while back, I didn't dissect it however, it just was cool to have. Hopefully you can stomache the slaughter house, they are pretty gnarly. I would love to see the pictures of both in the class room and the slaughter house. GOOD LUCK KALE!!!

If you have a microscope, go for teeth and antler too to look at cross-sections (growth rings, structure). Also, aside from use in jewelery making and carving, soak teeth in cola or make gelatine out of bone / antler and glue from hooves or try various ways of defatting the bone (and watch it turn to just mineral and then brittle dust).

Same is true for halibut vs salmon vertebrae (mineral to fat to protein) content varies.
